win32:pakes-atm in file CRTDLLo.dll a permanent fixture
« on: March 23, 2008, 12:16:37 AM »
Hi!
I'm trying to fix my father-in-laws machine, he's running avast on winXP, and we're running into this trojan.
We continually get the alert that the trojan is win32:pakes-atm in file windows/sytem32/CRTDLLo.dll ...

Naturally, we cannot quarantine it, delete it, or otherwise extract it.  If it were my machine, I would reformat and be done with it, but that's not an option.   I've been reading all the posts here at the forums that seemed similar, most recently this one:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=33784.0I've followed all the instructions therein, other than the restart in safe mode, because I haven't the foggiest what to search for.

Using Tech's posted steps:
Quote
1. Disable System Restore and reenable it after step 3.
2. Clean your temporary files.
3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on.
4. Use SUPERantispyware and/or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
5. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
6. Make a HijackThis log to post here or, better, submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
I've gotten this far.  Still no change.

I am including the hijack this log, in the hopes someone sees something (You will note I downloaded many of the programs recommended in the previous post):

Polonus:
Thanks so much for the complete response--I had to return to site to continue the process, but here's what I have so far:

This link:
Quote
Download unto your desktop

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe
Has been changed to
Quote
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe
For your future reference--took a bit of looking, but I found it!

I was unable to move the file you suggested.  Here is the Moveit Report:
Quote
File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctl3dv.dll not found.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.21 log created on 03242008_115752

I then downloaded Combofix, and ran it in msconfig's diagnostic mode--to be sure I had all anti-virus processes shut off--and it seemed to be successful, but I'm not sure.

I no longer get the "CRTDLLo.dll" trojan alert--which seems a good thing--and the combofix report says it was deleted...is that correct?

All seems well--I look forward to your opinion on these reports!

Combofix and hijackthis logs to follow:

Hi jackanape,

ComboFix worked apparently, and your hjt looks quite acceptable:
http://www.hijackthis.de/logfiles/dd86db7977768246e654304a05bd3bfb.html

pol

PS Consider fixing this:
O16 - DPF: {0F42F280-2D6E-4B19-95A9-18D8DADB9309} (BFLauncher Class) - http://www.betfred.com/company/gamessections/common/betfredlauncher.cab

You had a SearchNet infection (system32\drivers\fad.sys): If you have a Dell, you can reinstall the Dell driver that contains the "fad.sys" file. Then search your disk for "fad.sys" and make sure the file dates and sizes match the Dell driver folder. If not, just cut and paste the correct file into the offending folder.
