Doing a full scan/Virus auto updates

What happens when you are doing a thorough scan of the C drive and you have been on for 240 minutes, does the auto VPS still go through the motions? or does it know you are in the middle of a full scan and defer till later?

It will scan every file on your system with the exception of archives (if you didn't select them).

So by its name the thorough scan is very thorough and more so if you select archives.
You don't say a) anything about your system spec, CPU, RAM, etc. or b) how much data is in the hard disks that are being scanned, so there really is no way to say if it might extend to 240+ minutes.

I believe the VPS update goes on, it was suggested that you would still want the best/latest signatures by one of the Alwil team some time ago. But, I for a start wouldn't be going on-line whilst running a thorough scan in the first place. If you don't have an off switch on your modem/router then perhaps you could disable outbound connection in your firewall, many have this software switch/block all function.

It took over 2.5 hours or more I would say, and I could see the icon twirling on 240 minutes checking for VPS updates, luckily there was none at the time.

The auto VPS update has a switch to limit the cpu usage and it is also set at a below normal priority, so it physically shouldn't get in the way.

But as I said I would disable internet access whilst an unattended scan was going on to avoid the VPS update and any other program that you might have that tries to update automatically/periodically.

The icon does not swirl on update. You can set an special green&red icon to be shown while updating. For sure, the update process does not take 240 minutes... maybe 240 seconds in a dial up connection.

Tech, Nightshade is talking about the default 240 minute auto update check, if he happens to still be doing an on-demand scan when that default update check happens, not that the update takes 240 minutes.

I never said it took 240 minutes for the VPS update, the 240 minutes referred to the time it took for a thorough scan.

I think the update will happen and the scanning will be done with the new definitions since then. I hope someone from Alwil corrects me if I'm wrong.

Depending of your Standard Shield settings, I think avast is scanning the files used to get the update. So, yes, it could be ok.

Yeah, I think that Avast checks files that are already on the computer and compares them, and if they are different the update starts.

Can you give me a Standard Shield setting that would be a no to the icon swirling during possible VPS update scan.

And what would be the setting for it to be ok to swirl during this process, hopefully it will be the setting I currently have it set to, but I will check later anyway.

I know it's nothing too serious but it's nice to get these things understood.

Sorry, you're right... tested right now and even decreasing Standard Shield settings, the icon swirl while updating
