New users; cannot complete scan

Just built this computer last week ... quad core Intel processor, 4G of RAM and lots of HD space. I am using Windows Vista Business Edition. Avast 4.8 Pro installed just fine. I can go through all of the menus and perform product updates with no problem. I never had any indication there were any issues until I scanned yesterday.
It will only go to 96% of the scan then stop. Tried it twice. I let it run 14 hours the last time, after it reached the 96% level and it never completed. When I search for problems with business edition of Vista, all I see is previous versions of Avast.
What do I need to do?
I get no error messages at all by the way.

There has been a beta trial ongoing which has now just completed and there is a new program update, version 4.8.1195, right click the avast 'a' icon, select Updating, Program Update and get the latest version before trying any fault finding.

Try to enable report file creation in program settings; let everything, even "OK files" be included in the report.
When the scan freezes again, check the end of the report - what does it say?
It would be also userful to get a dump of the program at the frozen state (as described e.g.
here
); it might tell us even better where it's stuck.
