Avast! and dedicated antispyware products
« on: May 18, 2008, 11:25:53 AM »
Is there any need to run an independent spyware app with Avast?

I was previously using Avira with Spyware Terminator (ST).  Avira failed several serious malware tests and apparently has no option to exclude its false positives (of which there are many) from subsequent scanning activity.  It also doesn't have Stephen Hawking advising me of virus database updates, which in my view is essential in an AV app.

If the Avast! webshield is active (and the signature database includes spyware), what protection would a dedicated antispyware app like ST (or Spybot S & D), running in realtime, provide in addition?

Nowadays, I don't think so... but it won't harm if you have other applications to on-demand scannings, like ST, Spybot and specially SuperAntispyware.
