Avast 4.8 Home doesn't automatically update anymore
« on: May 19, 2008, 02:35:22 AM »
My avast found a Trojan Horse last week after I downloaded something from Limewire and ever since my Avast doesn't automatically update anymore. If I click on the red message box that shows up on the bottom right corner on my screen (which usually brings me to a detailed message why it didn't update), nothing happens.
If I try to manually update it, nothing happens.
Could it be because I still have that Trojan Horse on my Laptop? How do I get rid of it and how can I get my Avast to update again?

I doubt that the detection would cause the update to fail, more likely after you did a program update (you have done one recently ?) your firewall might be blocking the updates.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and  this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Which is your Windows? If you're using XP/Vista you have a firewall, if 98 or Me, probably not...

If I try to manually update it, nothing happens.
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Which version of avast! do you have? The latest is 4.8.1201.
If earlier, have you tried an update install using the latest download?

It says 4.8.1169. I'll try and download the newest version. I did just download the version that I have now in April though...

No, just right click the 'a' blue icon and choose Update > Program.

No, that's what I meant in my first post, if I try to manually update it, nothing happens... I keep clicking on it, but I'm not even getting an error message...

Try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

To try an "update" install (without uninstalling first) or to reinstall, the avast! Home 4.8.1201 download is here http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html#DownloadAvastHomeEdition

If I click on Repair/Remove, nothing happens. No pop-up window... And I can't uninstall it either obviously...
To Vladimyr: I already have it, I don't want to install it, i just want to update it...

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.
