trouble downloading avast
« on: May 23, 2008, 07:43:31 AM »
Hi
I've had avast for awhile now and it's been great but recently I've had some trouble with it ...something about an error came up whenever I started up my computer and I couldn't get into the avast program to work.   I tried the Repair feature and that did not help  so I decided to uninstall it and download a new copy and install it....but now when I try to download it it gets to a point where I have to press RUN for the 2nd time and it says UNINSTALL RECENT VERSION and that's that nothing. I have a new key but haven't been able to get to the part where I add it.
Hope you can help 'cause I'm totally lost  Elisa31   ;D

Sounds very odd.

Did it say uninstall more recent version?

Are you downloading the file and then running it from your computer?

Did you download from one of these these places:

Professional: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-professional.html

Home: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Hi
Yeah I had no choice but to uninstall the more recent version.
I haven't been able to download it into my computer.
I got a new key and pressed the link:-
http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html
which shows
Download pages of the individual products and went to avast! 4 Home Edition FREE Download and then I went to the Australian version and hit RUN on the setupeng once that was done I had to press RUN again to run the software and that's when I'm given a choice to either cancel or press next and uninstall the current version....doesn't matter which one I pick
I have no idea what to do. Totally clueless

Can you try an installation from the scratch?

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

I managed to download the avast program to my computer BUT I was never asked to put in my new key number and when I tried to open avast this is the message that came up:-
This application has failed to start because aswCmnB.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem

I haven't tried to do anything as this is what happened in the very beginning (when I first joined your forum) Have you got any suggestions Elisa31

Hi Elisa31

Glad to hear that Tech was able to help you get it sorted out, but I can't find the "Australian version" you mentioned on the download page. I've had to make do with the English version.  ;D  ;D

You won't normally be asked for the license key, avast! works as a 60 day trial by default.

If you installed without customiziing, the file aswCmnB.dll should be in:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4
along with about 200 others.

I'm beginning to think that you've got some sort of malware that's corrupting the avast! installation
Try this after restarting in Safe Mode
Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > avast!antivirus > click "Change/remove" > choose "repair"

You're not the only one! I'm only guessing as to what might be going on. It could be any one of a number of things but it's not something I've seen before. The error message is from Windows, reporting the inability to find and load the avast! .dll you mentioned.

What operating system do you have?
What kind of internet connection?
Have you tried, with or without success, to install any other AV programs?
Are there any other file errors being reported?

If you have Windows 2000, XP or Vista 32bit and you have ADSL or cable, try the F-Secure free online scan http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml to see if anything "evil" is found.

Did you look in "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4" for the missing file "aswCmnB.dll"?
Does it look anything like the attached screenshot?

Hello
Glad U R back to give me a hand.
I found aswCmnB.dll and I noticed that some of your applications have .exe....none of mine do. I'm attempting to download F-Secure now...fingers crossed.
Operating system??
Broadband internet connection
I haven't notice any other file errors being reported
Hope this helps....remember I'm pretty dumb when it comes to computers

Aaaarrrggghhhh!!
I did the f-secure and it found 2 spyware (AdTool.Win32.MyWebSearch  and  Tracking Cookie). I got rid of those and re-installed AVAST and the same silly message has come up again "aswCmnB.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem" Have you any ideas of what I should do next?
                         Elisa31
PS I actually had to go back to a previous setting on my computer 'cause my screen started to become unreadable.I tried the f-secure again and the same thing happened so I still have the AdTool and tracking cookie on my computer 'cause I was scared of what would happen if I tried to use the f-secure again. Are they bad for my computer? I never seem to get the easy quick fix problems....have you got any ideas or do I just get a hammer :-\

Hi Elisa31

Quote
Operating System??
I just meant which version of Windows.
From your replies, I'd guess it's Windows XP

I think something has corrupted you Windows files so that programs, like avast!, will not run properly.
I'm surprised you aren't getting the same response for any other programs.

I actually had to go back to a previous setting
Did you mean "System Restore"?
If not, XP has feature called System Restore which may save you having to reinstall Windows.
Click "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > Restore my computer to an earlier time.
Click "Next" and then choose a date in bold, that is earlier than when the problem first started.
Click "Next" again and follow the instructions.
The computer will eventually restart and show a message re success or otherwise of the restoration.
