Doing backups simply can not be stressed enough, last month My uncle lost a bunch of pictures from his past fishing trips because of a hard drive failure.

However I dont agree with the "reboot when programs crash" statement.  On Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X when a program, say a web browser, crashes it has no effect on the OS so there should be no need to restart the system.
