New Avast update gave me Blue Screen Of Death
« on: May 29, 2008, 05:00:20 PM »
Hello,

Windows XP v.5.1/SP2 home buillt machine (by a friend) in use 2.5 yrs with Avast home

I have been a satisfied user of Avast for at least 2 years, on 3 different computers.  Yesterday the Update window appeared "A new version of Avast is available on the Internet. Click Here to Install it"  (or something similar)

When I shut the system down and later tried to boot, I got BSOD. I originally thought it was a conflict with latest Windows update but I used Safe Mode and System Restore to go back one day and Windows booted normally.

After shutting down last night I booted this morning and Avast wanted to restart so I did.

BSOD!!!

Now I cannot even get into Safe Mode.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan

Can't you use 'Last known good configurations'?
Why can't you boot in Safe Mode? What happens?

I tried Last Known Good Config:

BSOD

I will get BSOD failure mode info and post momentarily.

NOTE: I have seen several different Failure reasons on subsequent BSODs

Which is the BSOD error (full error number)?

First Failure report was :  DRIVER_CORRUPTED_MMPOOL

"If this is the first time you have seen this screen..." etc.

EMPHASIS: I have seen several different failure reasons on different attempts.

OK, I got 2 hits:

My post above, and this advertisement -

"Problems with Error Code 0x00000002? Don't worry, we're here to fix it."

It's REGCURE repair program from tuneupadvisor.com

No help to me if I can't even enter Safe Mode

OK,

First I googled the whole string, because what do I know?  I'm just a shlub who doesn't know anything.

Then I googled just the 0x000000D0

I browsed the hits.

I have not installed any new hardware, I just allowed Avast to update and all #ell broke loose.

When I first was able to enter Safe Mode, I used System Restore to go back 1 day before the Avast update. Windows then restarted OK.

I got the "Avast Needs to restart" message and allowed it.  BSOD

I used System Restore again to go back 2 days and it restarted. Worked fine.

 I shut down last night.

When I restarted this morning I got the Avast Needs To Restart message.

BSOD.

Since I got different failure messages with different numbers I'm stumped. And now no Safe Mode.

I messed with CMOS setup bc my USB keyboard wouldn't access F8, only DEL to enter Setup.

Had trouble with that so used my other PS2 kb.

Now I get BSOD that reads 0x0000007b which MS website say can be anything from Boot Sector virus to device driver corruption or even other issues.

Now I also recall a "No Page" fault was one of the BSODs.

Going to work now, can't work on this anymore until tonight.

Thanks for your help.

Which is your access now? Can you boot in Safe Mode?
If so, check the folder <avast>\data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX there  (where XXXX is a random number)?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Since I messed with BIOS/CMOS setup I can not even access Safe Mode. When I was able to acces is I could Restore to earlier day and it ran fine until Avast asked for restart, then BSOD.  It would appear at the Welcome screen. Now it appears when I press enter at "Safe Mode" screen.

I am accessing Internet from other machines. My entire message thread was from my wife's computer in the next room from my own. Right now I'm at work, so I can't work on it.

If I can't get to Safe Mode I may try booting from CD or remove the drive and put it in another machine to see what's up.

Thanks.

You can restore the manufacture settings, generally.

I already tried in BIOS setup to use "Load Failsafe Defaults" and at the Safe Mode selection screen I tried restarting with "Last known congfig that worked"

BSOD.

All my really important stuff is backed up.

Thanks,
