That might be a good idea considering other posts I have read about upgrade problems. ;)

That is the problem with support forums, you don't see anything about those who have had no problems at all updating to 4.8 ;D

If you have win9x or winME then perhaps it is a worthwhile option as they seemed to have the lions share of update issues otherwise I would just update.

My suggestion was only meant as a precaution, there is no way of knowing who will have problems and who won't. I had problems when I upgraded from 4.6 to 4.7 and I wonder if I wouldn't have if I had uninstalled 4.6 and then installed 4.7 "cleanly," so to speak.

No disrespect was intended.  :)

That is the problem if everyone errs on the side of, it might go wrong so I best uninstall/reinstall then we would never find if a) there were any problems (that can be fixed) and b) we would become like so many other applications that require a reinstall on program updates.

This is one of the things I like about avast, the incremental updates (VPS and Program) extremely important to us dial-up users.

No offence taken, you did notice the smiley ;D and I also qualified my comment relating to win9x and winME users.

So is yours, tech. :)

You and DavidR (and many others) know quite a bit more than I do about Avast and antivirus program workings in general. It's pretty cool to see you guys at work. 8)
