I wonder if anyone can tell me why I can't see the Avast ball in the system tray?

Is it just hidden (use the < arrow to the left of the system tray icons) ?

What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers).  Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.

:-\ Thanks for the advice. I can now get the ashDisp.exe in the system tray! I do run an Ad-aware scan now and again, could that be the problem?

I think only ad-watch could be deleting the avast startup entry... but who knows... do you have the free or the paid version of ad-aware?

So, I think anything else is messing with avast installation... Can you guess what?

So, keep your eyes opened... if the 'a' blue icon disappears, post again ;)

I have to put the blue "a" icon in the system tray everytime I switch on the computer. Can you tell me how to make it automatic?

Normally Avast settings, appearance, "show Avast! tray icon".
Other things to check include the properties of the taskbar, for status of any hidden icons etc.
Make any sense?

1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
or
2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
or
3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
or
4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.
