Avast 4.8 Home not working anymore

Hello,
 I have had Avast 4.8 home (registered) running on Vista 64 for weeks now but today it just stopped.  When I select "Start Avast" the splash screen comes up and says "Wait. please. Testing operating memory and startup items" but nothing happens, it's frozen.
When I bring up the scan tool and press the right arrow start button it also stays on 0% but I can still pause.
Any suggestions?

Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

I don't have another antivirus running.
I tried the repair process and this seemed to fix the problem even though Vista complained that the repair process didn't work. I was able to run a full scan and no virus found. Thanks!

Another question: Does Avast scan for spyware? I think I read it did but I was expecting a list of spyware it found after the scan with level of threat.

Yes, it's integrated into the antivirus scanning, i.e., running a scan you're scanning for both virus and spywares.
