avast freezes up after virus warning
« on: June 14, 2008, 08:46:13 PM »
I was browsing earlier and avast gave me a virus warning, so I closed my browser and tried to run a scan. Avast! cannot finish the memory test, it just hangs. So after waiting while i press stop memory test, which also takes about 5 minutes to finally stop testing. Then when I try to run a scan it stays at 0% and never moves.
What can I do?

1. windows vista, i.e. 7, windows built-in firewall plus avast
2. cannot use browser, no site will come up, like there's no connection
3. I can ping any site on the internet though from that computer, and my connection is fine (this is a seperate computer in my home), and other software that uses the internet (like when I tell avast to get the latest virus database) works
4. mouse is fine, computer seems fast nothing frozen
5. avast itself will respond when I click on options but once i start a scan I can pause it but pressing stop has no effect.

it just won't perform the memory test and won't scan

i tried rebooting, maybe that wasn't smart.

I can try downloadin something from the net on this other computer and copying it over, but what do you suggest?

thanks

Have you tried a boot time scan?

Right click the scanner screen, select 'schedule a boot time scan' and reboot when requested.

I hope you find the problem!

A malicious web site really shouldn't be able to affect your computer like this. When you have found the problem, I suggest you scan for out-of-date and insecure software using Secunia Software Inspector and update any vulnerable software: this will help to prevent future infections.

If you want to double-check for a malware infection, try a scan with DrWeb CureIT!

If no malware is detected, you could try System Restore.
