csrss.exe error botnet?
« on: June 24, 2008, 04:30:29 PM »
Hi again everyone. So my newest problem: I'm going to say this has happened for maybe a week now, but I didn't think it was anything major until I did some research on it today. After my system starts up, there's this error message which reads, "Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\Confic\csrss.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

So I guess it might be a botnet of some sort according to various places that came up when I googled it. If I click ok, everything runs the same and I don't have any problems. It's just that error message at start up. If anyone can help me fix it, that'd be great.

Here's an HJT log in case it helps:

The problem is the F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe
Also fix : O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
Fix it with HijackThis and run a few online log analyzers for other things (see my signature)

I'm actually at work right now, so I shall definitely do those fixes with HijackThis when I get home. However, which online log analyzers did you have in mind? I went to the link in your sig and there are several options. I assumed it was the Malware Removal link and that took me to more tools to use.

Okay, still no reply. Well, when I turned my computer on this morning, the error message didn't appear, so I think we're good. Thanks for the help.

if you fix those items with HJT i'd then do a double check and run a scan with malware bytes anti malware and an on line AV like Kaspersky
post back if any hits

what anti spyware do you have on your computer
have you rt clicked the ball and done a program Avast update lately?
if so try a boot time scan

viper666 what did you exactly do to get rid of that error message?

I just ticked what Eddy had told me to in HiJackThis, and the problem was fixed. Nothing else had to be done.

And thanks for the concern, wyrmrider, but this problem was fixed back in June :).
