Windows Live email scanning
« on: November 02, 2008, 09:06:53 PM »
In avast settings I've configured it to insert a message of "CLEAN" or "INFECTED" in my incoming and out going messages but it doesn't seem to be working. In settings (avast! On-Access Scanner) under "Internet Mail" it shows it is active but lists Last Scanned BLANK....and Scanned Count 0 and i just went through about 20 NEW recieved emails. can someone help me with this?

@hotmail.com
Is enough... don't let your full email here as you'll receive spam from spambots...
Which program are you using? Windows Live Mail?

Hotmail in Windows Live Mail is retrieved via a proprietary method of Microsoft's called DeltaSync (it is a special form of http browser access).

It is not retrieved using the standard POP3 methods that avast is able to scan so Hotmail cannot be scanned in Windows Live Mail.

avast will not scan Hotmail account emails as they are downloaded if the user has chosen an http (WebDav) connection for their Hotmail account with a MS client.  There may be an exception in the case of Outlook.  The http connection is really providing an IMAP connection and I do not know how/if the Outlook plugin gets involved.

The POP/SMTP servers gradually being provided by Hotmail for users of non-MS clients (like Thunderbird etc) support only secured connections so again avast will not scan those (without additional steps).

Do you think that in the future avast will over come this obstacle and be able to scan hotmail itself or in windows live?

I would doubt it because it is a proprietary Microsoft conversion protocol, which is probably protected. I mean if you aren't using Windows Live Mail, Outlook Express or MS Outlook for your email client, then the only way to use Hotmail would be as it was designed as web based email through your browser. So that too is proprietary protocol/functionality at work.

David is quite correct - the newer DeltaSync protocol used with Hotmail accounts in Windows Live Mail is protected.
