RESOLVED: Can't Update Avast or Access Internet w/Avast Home ON
« on: November 07, 2008, 05:59:47 PM »
Vista machine; only firewall is Windows (disabled); no other software firewalls; originally went to AVG free 8.0 but could not get updates; removed AVG with Windows add/remove. Installed Avast per pdf instructions except removed outlook feature.

Now cannot register from install side since required access through Avast. Got Key directly with another PC since Avast must be off to access internet. When Avast active - no internet access.

Avast 4.8 from site.

Thanks, Bob

Be sure that AVG was completely removed with the tool you can download here: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools

Thanks ... for picking up the thread.
1. before this post I ran avg remover, uninstalled Avast and installed it again
1a.  and with your preply/suggestion I uninstalled avg again
2. I followed steps of instructions checking off each step (in case my 'enthusiasm' got in the way)
3. restarted laptop and it went to immediate scan
4. tried to update from system tray (right click ... update) ... cannot connect
5. then tried firefox launch ... cannot connect
6. viewed trouble shooting chapters and seem to call to set proxy for firefox  localhost and 12080 OK7. restart and attempted update ... cannot connect. Stop on-Access and tried firefox and does not recognize proxy
7. remove setting for firefox ... internet works with Avast disabled

That's where I am Thanks for time

Update - just remembered I had Norton pre-installed with this new laptop. I used Norton 2009.0.0.41 tool and removed that also.

Final Update (I hope) ... thanks to the question about AVG and being sure I uninstalled ALL of Norton I recalled that during the Avast scan I saw Norton flash as folders and files it scanned .... went to ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
for what apparently was a great uninstaller ... did the job.

Lesson learned for the mental dbase:
1) record for future reference all issues/installs/removes of any PC you touch ... you will need it
2) always ask yourself - when did it work fine and what was done since then
2) remember - remove does not mean remove all ... seek multiple tools

Good to know, as David said... Norton remains could really mess the computer.
