Windows update redirects to msn.com
« on: November 23, 2008, 05:38:05 PM »
So I have found out that at one point I got zlob.YU. I have done everything to remove it and all of it's unwelcome friends and even ran Avast and it found nothing. I just did another registry scan for zlob and nothing came back.

If I go to windows update it always takes me to msn.com

If I go to microsoft.com and click on updates and choose one of them, click download, unstead of the run or save window dialog, I get a small IE dialog popup box with page cannot be displayed. If I move forward to click the download button it goes to page cannot be displayed.

I have even reformatted my hard drive and disconnected all other drives and still the same thing.

I have MS download files saved on my computer like, IE 8 beta or the color module. If I try and run them, they start to install however need to talk with ms.com to get some of the exe files and fails.

I have no idea how to resolve this. Once again I have disconnected all other drives and reformatted and reinstalled win xp pro sp2 and still the same redirect to msn.com.

Anyone know how to resolve this hell?

I suggest:

SuperAntiSpyware Free
MalwareByte's Anti-Malware
Spyware Terminator (exclude the Crawler Toolbar, add on, and ClamAV module)

Can you verify that this resolves this particular issue regarding the redirect?

 :)  Hi :

"Zlob" is extremely difficult to COMPLETELY remove; you would be Best
helped under the guidance of an experienced, trained, certified, Volunter,
"Malware Removal Specialist" and the only One I know of on these Forums is
"essexboy", who is also a "Moderator" on the Geeks To Go Forums . There
are many Forums staffed by such "Malware Removal Specialists", another
One is "Spyware Beware" and IF selected, would start with the Info at

Thanks man, yah this is a real crapy deal. I have a $7K editing machine that has now been reformatted and I need certain drivers and updates to install various editing apps.

Even with my very techy somewhat vast pc knowledge I'm not sure if I have experience to handle much of this. '

I have the company that built this machine however giving it to them will likely make me out of this whole pc for more then a week.

Anyone know of the real fix at all?

hi sinivision i had the same problem that 'window update redirect to
msn.com.' and some "error message" i fixed like this "control panel-performance and maintenance-administrative tools-event viewer-system; if you have some error message " right mouse click then go to property" goto http:go//go.microsoft.com. this will direct you to
help and support center. wait until you receive same info then goto the bottom of the info click  Availability and description of the Port Reporter tool this will direct you to http://support.microsoft.com/ there you can find the windows update without being direct to the msn.com.   let me know

G'day!

I've got the same problem... (zlob & update.microsoft.com gets redirected to msn.com..)
After removing zlob the redirect problem still existed..
So I was running some tests to see where the update webpage is supposed to go and where it's going on my Windows XP machine...

My Linux box says: update.microsoft.com (65.55.13.158)
My Windows pc thinks: update.microsoft.com [207.68.172.246] --> well, this is msn.com... not good...

First conclusion: It's not my DSL Router as mentioned in some other forums...

Ok, let's flush the Windows DNS cache.

Code: [Select]
ipconfig /flushdns
:( Did not help a lot...
So the second conclusion was, that it's not a screwed up DNS entry, which stays in the local cache, but something messing around with the Windows DNS client..
Let's turn it off then...

Code: [Select]
net stop dnscache(Remember: This will stop your local DNS-client for this session only! After next reboot it's back on...)
Optional: De-active the 'DNS-Clinet' service in your Service Manager or a permanent change..

Now your browser(s) should finally resolve to update.microsoft.com...
Download whatever updates you can get.. :-)

For my part: As this is only a fix and I cannot give you any warranty, that all your problems are gone....... Consider making a complete fresh Windows installation some when soon on your pc...

Good luck..

Cheers!

Hi ,tobus welcome to the forum.

Thanks for sharing. It should be noted that the DNS Client is not a required service and can be disabled unless the computer is connected to a Domain.

This service should also be disabled when using a custom Hosts file or slow down may happen on W2K,XP, and Vista. The link below has info and a batch file that can be used for turning on/off the service for those who need it.

 http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I would still advice trying to find what is making the changes, but at least updates should be possible.
