Dear Tech - first lines

You must post the last (not the first) lines...

The last I need...

Dear Tech - appreciate your support here but you are losing me sorry. First you asked for the last lines of the log so I posted them (up to the the 10k forum limit). Then you asked for the first lines which I posted. Now you ask for the first lines again. What is it that you are looking for in the setup log? Am I sending you the wrong first and last lines ?

Thanks

Then you asked for the first lines
I never did that...

Now you ask for the first lines again.
No... I never asked the first ones, but the last ones...

The setup file appends entries to the existing content, so the last lines in the setup.log are the most recent (chronologically and would relate to your recent problem) and the ones Tech has been asking for are the last ones in the file.

Means that you have the last vps (virus database file): 2008-12-30 update 00 of this day. It's ok.

Seems files are being downloaded and your update is working...

The license key seems ok also...
Strange I can't understand what's wrong! ???

:) Thanks Tech - does Avast need to be loaded in a common area? or is it OK where it is C:MyComputer/Program Files? I am surprised that as Avast is running from boot time, why does it try to do a registration key check when simply changing user. Is it something in the way the start-up accounts for XP are working. It's as though Avast.exe or whatever is being called each time when it is already running. Like it's seeing each account separately.

Thanks

avast could be installed in any folder (better non accented characters in the name).

I'm not following you... avast won't ask the key if you change the user if you have already added the license key in the administrator account.

I totally agree, very confusing - fyi it's not asking for the key only saying that it's not entered - which obviously it is according to the setup log.

I think I give up - it's either a MS or an Awil problem...

I installed avast! Home last night, as administrator. When I log in on my kids' accounts (restricted users) I don't get any error messages, but I don't see the Avast icon in the system tray. I don't see it in the process list either. Is it running and I just don't see it on the restricted accounts, or what?

I don't see it in the process list either.
The process list should show process for all users.
Maybe you can test Process Explorer from Microsoft and check for list processes of all users.

The icon should be there.
1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
or
2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
or
3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
or

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?

If sideman44 is using XP(don't know about Vista but probably the same), he may need to check the box at the lower left of the Task Manager to enable showing processes of all users. See the image below. Click it to enlarge.

CharleyO, does this work (I mean, is it enabled or grayed out) with non-admin users? ???

Ok, I uninstalled avast and Spybot, rebooted, installed avast (but not Spybot), booted, etc. Now the processes are shown for all users, but the system tray icon apparently shows up for admin accounts only. I promoted one account to check, and sure enough, the icon showed up. But, as long as Avast is running I don't really care if the icon shows up or not. Any reason I should?

On my first restart after reinstalling Avast, I got the RPC error from AAVM. I followed the steps in the faq on this, and found that Avast was set for automatic start, but had not started. I started it manually successfully, and it has restarted automatically on every reboot since. Seems odd, but again, as long as it works....

Thanks for your help!
