Installing avast! 4.8 across multiple accounts on same computer
« on: December 14, 2008, 04:53:29 AM »
Feeling pretty brain dead.  I have XP SP3 and have 4.8 running on my account.  On the other accounts on the computer, I tried to use the same key but keep getting told that the key is invalid.  What should I be doing?

avast runs globally on the systems on which you install it.  avast is not configurable on a per account basis.

I understand the global nature of avast but...

1.  the original install was done under my account.
2.  when account #2 logs on, avast puts up a window that says the key is invalid
3.  when account #3 logs on, the same thing happens as #2.

From a layman's point of view, I would suspect that something is not installed correctly.  Thoughts?

Are there more than one administrator account? Sometimes avast does not work well in this environment.
The registration must be done with admin rights. As Alan said, no settings per user basis.

I did verify that there is only 1 administrator account.  The other accounts have limited access.  When starting up the other accounts, the avast splash signifying an invalid key is displayed.  I did check and clearly see that the ash... processes are running in Task Manager.

Any thoughts before I uninstall and reinstall avast again?

Welcome to the forums,  wjvanbeek.   :)

When avast is installed, be sure it is installed using the administrator account.

Also, the license key has to be entered under administrator account.

I did verify that there is only 1 administrator account.
So, it should work without problems.

Will uninstall and reinstall later tonight, totally under the admin account.  Will let the group know how we are doing.

Me too - same problem. Installed as Owner Administrator in the C/Program files directory. Registration key entered as Owner Administrator. Checked there are no other admin accounts. Still get message "no license key entered"  on the 3 other accounts apart from Owner account. Have tried installing in the shared all user area of c: still no difference. Uninstalled - reinstalled many times stiill doesn't seem to get rid of message.  Any help please.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

How many accounts are there with admin rights?

Dear Tech - there's only one admin account, the machine owner and this is where Avast has been installed from. I have done numerous uninstalls.

By the way the Avast uninstaller won't work for me it says to turn off the safe protect mode of avast which doesn't seem to work if you tick the box in the troubleshooter menu. Only way I have found to use the Avast util is to uninstall from the control panel  add/remove  - then use the Avast util to clean up.

But still no change after reinstall - same messages in the other accounts - licence key invalid - not sure I understand why this even comes up if Avast is global. It's as though the other accounts are trying to load Avast independently.

So same problem exists. Have you tried this yourself? Do you have Avast running on XP Home edition across multiple accounts?

For sure. I've used this configuration (multiple users accounts) a lot of times.
Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
