mcafee says i have the above virus on my pc. however avast does not detect it during a start up scan. any explanations please? and how do i remove it?

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?

If the -gen in the malware name is like the -gen in avast's malware names then this could be a generic signature which are more prone to false positive detection.

You could also check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner and report the findings here the URL in the Address bar of the VT results page.

If multiple scanners detect it then you should send the sample to avast.

Are you using McAfee (AV) and avast together on the same system (a recipe for disaster) ?

thanks for your replies - here's a bit more info... i used mcafee for 2 years but have n't renewed so wont receive latest updates. they sent me an email warning me about 'new viruses' and offered a 'free scan' which detected the trojan in C:\programme files\...\readmedia.dll - perhaps its a scam to scare me into renewing??? following a recommendation, i installed avast yesterday - and the original start up scan did not detect it.

i am not running mcafee and avast together - mcafee has been removed. another thing...  i use aol - and its free spyware programme detects 'higleider' but again the avast scan did n't confirm this, and neither did the mcafee free scan. i'm concerned cos recently i started to get pop ups and my pc is now running slower, and pc was unprotected for a couple of weeks - silly me i know!

To be sure you're clean, I suggest:

1. Clean your temporary files.
2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
3. Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete them.
4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
5. Make a HijackThis log to post here or this analysis site. Or even submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
6. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster.
8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

If you do a google search for the file name, some of the hits have this as a WMA to MP3 Converter or Free iPod Video Converter, do you have such a tool/converter installed ?

Though it is entirely possible that these applications are bogus. I would still say you should check the file at virustotal.

You apparently have no firewall active, and you use an older browser IE6, and did not install XP SP3 (you can do these things after you have cleansed your computer of malware):
This is not good and shoud be fixed:

I believe since you have the mp3 converter program it might be a false positive by McAfee, so I would upload readmedia.dll to virustotal and post the URL of the results page, this will confirm the detection on way or the other.

Your JAVA version is out of date and can be a vulnerability.
Ensure you have the latest version of JRE (JAVA Runtime Environment) because older versions can be vulnerable to malware. First remove All Older Versions From Add/Remove Programs.
Then get the latest update from here http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Or JRE version 6 update 11 http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sun_Java_Runtime_Environment_d4648.html

OK, something we neglected last time out, having two anti-virus application installed at the same time is a no, no, too much chance of a conflict, rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.

Your version of AVG7 is also like some other stuff out of date (now avg8 and bloated by comparison to avg7), so you should uninstall it using add remove programs. The old version, avg7 is reasonable at removing all elements of it, but just in case here is another link - AVG Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one (32bit).

Your Firewall might be on but:
Whilst the windows XP firewall is usually good at keeping your ports stealthed (hidden) it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall.

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

- There are many freeware firewalls such as, Comodo (care required now it is a suite not to install the anti-virus element), PCTools Firewall Plus, Jetico, etc. - Zone Alarm free works fine with avast and has a reasonably friendly user interface, however, the free version is becoming bloated with trial ware and is also crippled as far as outbound protection goes In the Program Control, configuration area, the slider will only goes as far as Medium protection, if you want more you have to buy the Pro version.

I thought the lady moonlight mentioned somewhere she only used a free scanner, so I assumed she did not have conflicting resident av scanners there, put on my specs and see what you mean now. What I like to know is "Was the speedbar installed as an OEM install or was it a personal choice to download it?". Why for instance Dell makes agreements to put these questionable programs/tools onto new computers, the average user does not know how to rid their new machine from additional crap they haven't asked for, and one questionable "character" may invite another in,
