Avast will not run virus scan

 ???  I have tried repeatedly to get it to run a virus scan and all it will do is run the memory scan and close.  I've tried right clicking on it and ask it to run, asked to run by the administrator and it will not do anything but a  memory scan and close.  HELP,  I'm afraid I might have a virus and it is not permitting me to do the scan.  I have a Compac preserio, running Vista (UG!) and my Avast is 4.8.

Do you or did you have another AntiVirus program on your computer?
Which one and how was it removed?

No I did not have another virus program on this pc except Avast for quite awhile.  Nothing new has been on.  I did my normal Sunday virus scan last week and it does it's normal updates as it will, but today it won't do the scan!  I'm perplexed as to what to do.

Try scheduling a boot scan.

I tried that too. I uninstalled it and then installed a new one.  It's working fine.  Crazy!  I still don't know what happened.  Thanks for the feed back. ;D

I don't know what happened, either. Maybe the install somehow became corrupted? Who knows.

When you say "for quite a while..: in respect to another AV, what was installed before? Might be worth following up on in case an old Norton or McAfee leftover was responsible for this.
