Function "usiGetSkin" failed
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:27:51 AM »
Please Help!! I just downloaded Avast 4.8 Home edition and when I try to open the program I get the following message:

Unknown error. Application cannot load skin. Function "usiGetSkin" failed

I tried the solution in FAQ.
But I get a message DllRegisterServer in ACTSKIN4.OCX failed.
Return code was: 0x80020009

I searched in forum and also tried
opening the file <avast>\data\avast4.ini, look up the [UserInterface] section, and add the following entry:

StartWithSkin=0
but no success

I also uninstalled rebooted and installed again.  Same problem.

Any help from experts will be greatly appreciated

stupid question, but have you tried running a repair to fix avast?

If that doesn't work, let me know. Hopefully by then, I'll have some more solutions waiting.

Has this system been running for a while since you installed windows / bought it?

There could be some screwy things going on with the registry.

By your first post, it looked like you got a error:
Quote
But I get a message DllRegisterServer in ACTSKIN4.OCX failed.
Return code was: 0x80020009

I'm guessing you were running a regsvr32 command on it.

If that fails, sometimes that is because you don't have permissions to the registry that the dll (or ocx) is trying to write to.

A quick google search got me here:  http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/235204.htm

Have no idea if it will help or not.

But like I said, if you've been running your computer for a while, and haven't re-installed, then this sort of thing can happen.

Let us know what you find out.

Good luck with AVG - it totally corrupted my Windows OS and I had to pay Dell to get me back to the Factory settings - could not boot the computer at all.  Their forum is run by a lot of bullyboys who talk down to others who are not so knowledgeable and just trying to get help.  Avast for me anytime.

hello everyone there i just if i may posible can help you  with your problem cause encountered the same problem too i have done the steps and clues that i have read on forums but nothing seems to work
but the other one gave me an idea

and successfully fixed the problem

it may have happened when i try to upgrade my avast 4.7 to 4.8 and does not uninstall first the 4.7 before the 4.8 and might some of the files of 4.7 are not completely updated and think that the 4.8 needs a throughly  fresh installation.

so what i did was login as administrator, uninstall the avast 4.8 and before i reinstall it i delete the whole alwil folder from the c:windows\program files\ because i saw some files are still present even i have already unistall the program...so after deleting the whole alwil software i just install a fresh avast 4.8
thanks for reading and i hope this one will help you..
avast is a good open source antivirus and low memory comsumption compared to others

hi i am paul jordan liao 20 year old from the phillipines..if you have comments please email me  thanks again :) hope this one will help

Thanks for the input, but I would advise you to remove your email address unless you particularly like spam.

The forums are publicly available and there are bots that trawl web sites to harvest email addresses to add to spam lists.
