Hello there,

I just updated to Avast 4 in Windows Vista and I can no longer open Outlook.  I've done some research into the problem and some sites suggest renaming the extend.dat file (which doesn't seem to work).  The outlook window opens but will not load.  This is extremely frustrating as outlook has worked with Avast for months before the update was installed.  Any help is greatly appreciated as I need to receive important business emails.

Cheers,
Utterina

Which is the error message?

Delete "extend.dat" file: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=155.msg651#msg651
The extend.dat file is in a hidden folder, so if you're Explorer to do the search, you need to explicitly enable searching of hidden/system files...
