@ Sammo:  As I'd mentioned earlier, that manual proxy setting you suggested for HTTP worked beautifully, thanks.  I hardly ever see "looking up ...." any more, and delays when "waiting for" or "loading data" are normal and expected, depending on how heavy internet traffic is both in general and at the destination site.

I do still get some "looking up" delay (not as bad as the other was) when connecting to secure sites.  Is there a separate setting for HTTPS (maybe the SSL proxy?), or is that just something I have to live with as part of the encryption/decryption process?  Thanks again, and best.
You may want to make sure that your Internet Explorer proxy settings are correct even if you don't use IE (the same setting would apply to most browsers):

Proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when using broadband and/or local area network (LAN) Internet connection

   1. Start Internet Explorer.
   2. Select Tools ® Internet Options... from the main menu.
   3. Switch to page Connections.
   4. Click on the LAN Settings... button.
   5. Check the option Use a proxy server for your LAN
   6. Write localhost into the Address field (alternatively, you can enter IP address 127.0.0.1, which is the same as localhost).
   7. Enter 12080 into the Port field.
   8. Confirm with OK button.

Firefox 3.5.1 due this week to fix security and slow startup bugs
http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2009/07/firefox-3-5-1-due-this-week-to-fix-security-and-slow-startup-bugs/
Hmmm... Not all the extension makers did the upgrade to 3.5 yet... I need the extensions, I'll wait.

Nightly Tester Tools will make all the extensions compatible:

That isn't entirely correct, they don't make the extensions compatible, but stop the compatibility check from being done as far as I'm aware, which is why I won't use it.

From http://www.oxymoronical.com/web/firefox/nightly:

Don’t forget that forcing an incompatible extension to install is risky. There are many cases where Firefox will stop working completely or behave incorrectly because an incompatible extension is being forced to work where the author never intended.

Here we rely on a little more than luck ;D
Especially when suggesting it for others, then the downsides should be mentioned so they can make an informed decision.

Hi folks,

But also add a positive note when needed. I have used the nightly tester tools for ages now, and I should as I am testing the latest nightly builds of Shiretoko fx browser. Just use it on extensions that haven't upgraded to the latest development builds.
There is more of an issue with extension incompatibilities than this. How would a developer test without this? If an extension won't update or cannot be checked in fx add-ons, it is a better idea to forget about such an add-on or extension. FEBE I had some issues with, never with ntt,
To test run your browser in safe mode and see what difference this make, also check the errors you get in the error console and the memory consumption in task manager. These could be indications.
Lately I am using SRWare's Iron, version 3.0.189.0 (18153), lean, mean, secure, and I added Adblock+ bookmarklet
Code: [Select]
javascript:(function(){function R(w){try{var d=w.document,j,i,t,T,N,b,r=1,C;for(j=0;t=["object","embed","applet","iframe"][j];++j){T=d.getElementsByTagName(t);for(i=T.length-1;(i+1)&&(N=T[i]);--i)if(j!=3||!R((C=N.contentWindow)?C:N.contentDocument.defaultView)){b=d.createElement("div");b.style.width=N.width; b.style.height=N.height;b.innerHTML="<del>"+(j==3?"third-party "+t:t)+"</del>";N.parentNode.replaceChild(b,N);}}}catch(E){r=0}return r}R(self);var i,x;for(i=0;x=frames[i];++i)R(x)})() . The avast shields protect this browser, and I am actually writing this posting using SRWare Iron browser,

Sammo,
The link for 3.5.1 doesn't work.  Also they said 3.51 may not fix the bug and maybe we should wait for 3.5.2 which should be out in late July.

I just downloaded it from this link and it definitely runs faster that the 3.5 official release. The Mozilla site has been busy. Try right clicking on the link and 'save as' instead. I had the same problem.

Why isn't it available as an update from within the program ???
Checking for updates I get a message that the system is up to date.

It takes a little while for it to be picked up in the internal update, usually only a day or two though.

I can't take advantage of the link as it is the en-US version, so I have to wait until the en-GB version is available.

Sammo,
I found why the link didn't work on my machine.  I was getting a double //ftp in the address, so I just deleted the double and the download of 3.5.1 began.
I still think I may wait for the 3.5.2 fix.

Thanks Sammo,
It finally loaded as an update this morning. Unfortunately the loading of websites is still a mess.
