Can't start avast on-acess scanner

I just install Avast Anitivirus 4.1 home edition but it can't start avast on-acess scanner. When I right click the ball icon to start Avast Antivirus,  the splash screen will appear and an error message will appear showing  Error 0x000000C1 splash cannot execute the following program C:\programfiles\AlwilSoftware\Avast4\ashsimpl.exe
When I double click the icon, it shows a message avast: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error. The operation could not be completed.

Can anyone help me how to resolve this?

RPC error is generally corrected by repairing the avast installation.
Control Panel > Add/Remove programs applet > avast antivirus
Choose Change/Remove button and then at the window that pop up, choose 'Repair' function at left.

If it does not succeed, try uninstall/boot/install/boot again.

Can you post the results?
Btw, do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?

I tried going to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs  > avast antivirus
Choose Change/Remove button, there is no window that pop with choose 'Repair' function at left. It will uninstall Avast.  

I have also try uninstall/boot/install/boot again a few times before but still have the same message. I am using windows 2000 and have checked my RPC at Services for Avast antivirus is running under Automatic which is right.

Pls help me solve the problem. Many thanks.

Without RPC service means without Windows... You cannot run Windows without RPC.
So it's normal you have it automatic running.

Strange that you cannot solve by 'uninstall/boot/install/boot again'...
Can you say if you have any other antivirus installed in your computer? Even in the past, did you install one? How did you remove it?

I used to have Mcafee antivirus professional 7. Remove through Control Panel Add/Remove Program.

I managed to get Avast to work on my notebook but not my desktop both are running windows 2000. I don't understand why, also my notebook is able to run Mcafee and Avast at the same time at the taskbar.

Vlk, I saw your tread. Tried going to do the regedit, what do u mean by quotations? There is no quotation. How do I change the quotation?

By a quotation mark, I mean "

I.e. just put the path in betwen " " like instead of

C:\avast\ashserv.exe

have there

"C:\avast\ashserv.exe"

Does that make sense?


BTW do you happen to have a file called program.<something> in your root directory?
