slow, slow, slow

Having been recommended Avast Free by a friend, I got rid of AVG and downloaded Avast Free 4.8 yesterday (14 Aug 09).  On opening up today two hours ago, my computer has a delay of between 5 and 10 seconds on any action I take including typing.  Grateful to know why and what I can do to resolve the problem.  Also how do I know when Avast is scanning and finally how do I adjust the scan settings to take out, for example, scanning of outgoing e-mails.  Grateful for some assistance as a bit of a newcomer!

First ensure all remnants of AVG are gone - AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.avg.com/download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

When avast is scanning the avast 'a' icon in the system tray rotates.

I wouldn't advise not scanning outgoing emails and far from disabling that I would suggest that you increase the Sensitivity of the Internet Mail provider. The reason for this is that on this sensitivity it may well give the first indication that you have a hidden or undetected trojan spambot on your system.
