Avast Antivirus Home Edition provides solid antimalware protection and a good set of features, but its outdated interface needs a makeover.
Avast Antivirus will do a decent job protecting a PC from malware, but if you're willing to put up with a less-than-perfect interface (and some ads), you're better off going with Avira's top-notch blocking.

Be sure to read the how-to guide that pops up the first time you use the program, unless you enjoy scratching your head and growling at your monitor
He is not saying that Avast contains ad's he is referring to Avira containing them read slowly.
I am always skeptical about anything published in PC World as they are advertising driven and promote products that advertise there favorably and negatively those that don't. Can a hard copy of PC World still be purchased?Last time I read one 90% was advertising with full page ads for products and maybe 1% good stuff.
