PC Tools firewall + ?
« on: October 11, 2009, 07:39:51 PM »
yeah, I'd like to have more info; couldn't find interesting reviews, just a few lines on web sites offering the download, and Matousec leak test...OK I don't want to go through a whole uninstall of CIS just to try PCTools firewall if it's not worth it. Actually I might just disable CIS temporarily...anyway, anyone here using it, looks it's got a HIPS ? thanks.

edit: just realize I don't even know if it can be installed on 64 bit OS...
edit: looks like yes...

The only fw I can recommend for Vista 64bit or Windows 7 64bit is Windows 7 & Vista Firewall Control.

I've tried all the fw's for 64bit  os and they have problems, except Windows 7 & Vista Firewall Control.

I just installed it,just disabled CIS completely as I said...looks cool and interesting so far...very clear interface. PCTools so far for me meant Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanics, both excellent products.

edit: yeah it (PCTools firewall) installs and run fine on win7/64, but it's a 32 bit app. No big deal.

yeah I saw that too on another site but it installs as a 32 bit app. Behaves normally though so it's OK. There must be restrictions on applications and kernel protection...not sure, I don't have enough knowledge on the subject to tell.

I had network problems when I tried it. Problems between XP and Vista and Windows 7. It either didn't connect or dropped the connection. I finally gave up on it.

just read on Wilders that Symantec owns PC Tools now  ??? I didn't know this...

edit: actually, considering the degree of quality of Spyware Doctor, I'm not surprised they were interested.

yeah I had a crash of it while clicking on a details button for connections...no big deal. I'm back on CIS. Anyway PCTools firewall seems to give more info about the nature of the traffic than CIS does. That reminds me of the Sygate firewall interface a bit. And protection seems just as good as one can expect from a good firewall.

I'm interested in it as well. Is it more user friendly than Comodo? If it is, maybe I can talk my ladyfriend here into trying it instead of still using the XP firewall. Maybe I'll install it on her system when she's not around lol and take it for a test drive. I can always uninstall it  ;).

yeah, it's definitely easier to use for newbies. It's set to create rules completely automatically as default behavior. No pop ups at all  ;)

As I said, Windows 7 Firewall is the only good fw for Vista 64bit & Windows 7 64bit.

OA is the best fw for XP & Vista 32bit.

I can't wait for OA's 64bit version. 8)

That sounds very intriguing, I'm gonna give it a whirl. Who knows? I may even like it better than Comodo for myself.  lol
