no audio device
« on: August 17, 2009, 04:40:28 PM »
After installing avast free home edition, my computer which runs on Windows Vista, will not play music.   When I try playing music from itunes I get message that there is no audio device attached.   There is also a little icon in bottom tray that says "no audio device."  How do I correct this?  Can anyone help?

Hello Deborah2009,

answer all of these:

1. did you have audio before you installed avast!?

2. which version of avast! do use?

3. have you installed updated drivers for your devices? or did you do a recent update of all your drivers?.

4. what other security products did you have before avast! and now in conjunction with avast!?

Thank you, and yes I had audio before installing avast! 4 Home edition.  Ihaven't updated drivers yet.  Should I try that?

I wouldn't go updating the drivers right now, if the audio worked before.
If you answer q 4 it may help.
Any other AV installed prior to Avast? Any other security software installed? (Firewall, antispyware, etc)

Hi there,

I'm having the same problem as Deborah.

I used to have AVG antivirus on my Windows XP laptop, but I recently installed Avast and uninstalled AVG. My laptop now has no audio. I've tried reinstalled the sound card driver and also did system restore, but I can't seem to solve the problem.

I would appreciate any help or advice  :)

Hi jann24, Kia Ora.
Go Here, download and run tool number 2, (use the version appropriate for your OS, usually X86, but if you have 64bit Windows, use X64), try repairing your Avast installation, (- not always necessary but sometimes required; Control panel>add/remove programs) reboot, and see if it works.

Hello jann24

after doing what tarq57 suggested, try this

control panel > sounds and audio devices > sounds tab > sound scheme > select no sounds > apply > ok.

again,

control panel > sounds and audio devices > sounds tab > sound scheme > select windows default > apply > ok.

post back.

Hi nmb,

I tried the methods that u guys suggested, but they didn't work. So all I did was to system restore to the end of last week instead of just the previous day (like I did before). And that seemed to do the trick. Thanks though.. :)

Cheers.
