AntiVir Malware
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:12:58 AM »
I had to work on a friends computer which is running the latest updated Avast 4.8.

Hi got "AntiVir" malware which is a fake anti-virus that shows false positives and asks for money.  This is not the product from Avira.

I was just wondering how this got past Avast and onto his computer.

Yes I know nothing is perfect.

some would argue the real antivir (from Avira) would have stopped the rogue (and other rogue AV) from installing...when supposedly avast wouldn't have...wondering, never had to face such an issue, I guess I'll test this in a VM one of these days.

I think the bigger question is why they chose to let it install in the first place.

yeah, her laptop, extremely outdated but she doesn't care...I removed AVG from it to install MSE instead, expecting the system would be a tad faster...this laptop is a nightmare  ::)
