Trouble with Registration
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:30:21 PM »
I just installed the free version of Avast! the day before yesterday.  When I try to register, I click on the "Register Now" button, which I assume is an on line way to register.  When I do this, a small window pops up which says, "Retrieving information, please wait".  It just sits there and tries this but never does "Retrieve" the information it is looking for.

I have also tried to do the offline registration and fill out the form, but I never get the registration key e-mailed to me to register with.  I know I never received an e-mail, not even delivered to my junk mail folder on my ISP's server.  I have even tried a couple of different e-mail accounts, one on my ISP and the other on my cellular's blackberry service.  How can I get this registered???

I want to use this product, but am afraid that I may not be able to because of this.

Any help is appreciated.

Which version? 4.8.xxx? 5.0.xxx?

Here is a thread starter who had the same issue.  However, it may be suitable for you to see how the registered versions will work in your environment before registering the product.  IIRC, both Pro/Suite versions have trial period of 30 days if you download them from the official site.

BigknockHawk,
For online registration go to http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php. Fill in all fields, not just those that are marked with asterisks. Click on a button labeled "Register for free license". After wait 5 minutes and check e-mail.

A few points:

(1) The v5 free version does not use a key, so you will
not get one via email. You should get a popup dialog to
fill in some particulars, and after you send it you will
automatically be registered.

(2) Make sure the program is not being blocked from sending
to the Internet by your firewall. You may have to set its
privileges.

(3) Under the General Settings, "Updates" - you may have
to alter the settings for how you access the Internet.

I do not agree with the above.

I have an e-mail came the following letter:
"Dear user,
Your registration of avast! Free Antivirus was successful. You must now insert your license key into the program.
Your license key is:"

Ok, so I know that Avast can connect to the internet because I was able to run the "Update" for the engine and definitions.  I also have checked to see that I have my firewall configured to allow Avast! to be able to connect.  When I click on the "Register Now" button, the form never pops up.

When you register via the "Register" button in the UI the registration is normally
instantaneous. No email is sent. No key is sent. You get an immediate pop-up
which says: "Thank you for registering."

That's how it has worked in all of the Beta and Release versions of the V5 Free AV
which I have installed. If it no longer works that way, then they must have changed
it very recently.

SOLVED:

You are probably not using Internet Explorer as your primary browser so you would not notice that your Internet Explorer is running in offline mode.  At least that is the reason my Avast registration dialog did not pop up.

I started Internet Explorer, pressed "Connect" button instead of "Stay offline," and presto, Avast registration dialog popped up in under 1 second.

Hope this helps some other baffled users.
