Anyone else have this problem?
« on: March 17, 2010, 07:45:29 PM »
Hello all,
I just wanted to report? this bug and see if anyone else has had it
Sometimes firefox browsing is "semi" covered by avast, Ill go the www.eicar.com test site to see if everything is running and Avast will block the connection for the first test file, but ill never get a pop-up saying anything was blocked, same for all the other files, the only way to get the pop-up's back is to close firefox once or twice and completely restart it any idea's as to what's causing this?

eicar has two sides to its testing, one that uses standard HTTP connections which the web shield monitors and HTTP, secure encrypted connections which the web shield can't scan so it doesn't monitor HTTPS connections.

The File System Shield scans newly created files (which would normally cover saved downloaded files), depending on your file system shield settings and the file type that is downloaded, zip files don't present an immediate risk (as they are inert) so aren't scanned.

So as you can see from the above there is no way we can say one way or another as we don't know anything about your settings, connection http/https or the file type concerned ?

Hi DavidR
The problem is that sometimes remember that this doesnt happen all the time but avast will detect the file it seems (It aborts the connection on standard HTTP connections) but I dont get a popup alerting me of "Malware Blocked"  and usually when I test the Secure encrypted connections it will still detect the file if its not in a zip and send it to the chest but when this error or bug occurs it doesnt popup saying Malware was detected.

Again that depends on your avast settings as in the web shield settings the auto action is to abort the connection, so you may not see an alert as such in the same way as 4.8.

I have all my real-time shields, expert settings, actions, first action set to Ask as personally I'm against any automated action in a security program. I want to know what is going on and I want to make the decisions.

The problem is I don't know what your settings are, so I can't respond.

Alright sorry for not including that info, Im using Avast! 5 the web shield is set for all to "Abort connection" and on file system shield it is all set to "send to chest"

I understand this, but the problem is that sometimes I get a alert and sometimes I do not, I was wondering if this was normal or not because it seems like a bug (to me atleast).

Yes, but without the exact situation of what you were doing when you didn't get an alert and when you do, etc. etc., e.g. what eicar file name and if it were http or https, etc. or any answer is nothing more than speculation.

Yes, the pic 2 shows that you are downloading from https... so avast can't scan.
