Avast Shut Off after Reboot
« on: April 21, 2010, 07:12:14 AM »
Can't get Avast to work on a Dell 5150 running XP SP3. It installs just fine, updates itself, etc. I've even managed to run full scans with it, but as soon as the system is rebooted, it comes up with an X on the icon and won't start.

I've tried 4.8, I've tried 5. I've used the uninstaller in safe mode a million times and reinstalled a million times. I've done repairs and everything else under add/remove programs. I've hit the fix now button, the start button. Occasionally something works temporarily, but it always shuts down again on reboot.

I've scanned the machine with SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, Dr. Web CureIt, TrojanRemover, ComboFix, etc. It comes out squeaky clean, as do the scans I've managed with Avast.

The system previously had AVG, but as it didn't work right, it was uninstalled, and the AVG removal tool has also been used. Since it's a Dell and might have come with Norton installed on it originally, the Norton removal tool has been run.

I've also removed Avast and tried installing Avira, which wouldn't work either. Another oddity is that after I download the Avast installer, use it to install, if I've removed Avast later, and try to reinstall, the installer comes up saying it is corrupted, or there's a problem expanding, and I have to download the installer all over again.

Oh yeah, I even did a repair install on Windows in the middle of this, and all windows updates have been installed.

So, any ideas? Thanks!

I know you've already done, but I suggest:
1. Use both antivirus uninstallers again.
2. Then an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

Well if you still haven't been able to get it to work you may want to try the suggestion that I am going to go ahead and make. But obviously since I'm new to the forum I'd understand if you didn't want to listen to it.

But anyways I would recommend that you uninstall avast using Revo Uninstaller you can download this utility tool for free from cnet/downloads.com

Then after you have totally uninstalled avast using this program you should reinstall it. Then obviously reinstall avast. After you have done that make sure that you have avast registered and everything (whether or not its the free/pro/security doesn't matter. Just simply make sure you register the program properly.

Then simply load up a the run window.   (I will describe the steps for how to do this below step by step)
- This can be done by clicking your start bar
- then selecting "all programs"
- then select "accessories" then select the "run" icon
- Then once the "run" box pops up type "msconfig"
- then press enter or click "ok"

At this point you will see the "system configuration" box pop-up. Then simply select the "startup" tab.
Then you simply make sure that anything that says avast has a check mark next to it.

Then click on apply, then a box will pop up asking you to restart at this point you need to simply click "restart now" then when you reboot another little box will pop up and just click check the "don't show this box again box" then obviously check to see if it actually started up properly this time for you.

Another thing I'm wondering is if you are possibly running any other AV or Spyware/Rogueware or any other type of security software. Because in some cases they can cause other security programs to malfunction.

Another thing that may be the problem could be if your settings aren't set-up right in your avast program for some reason or another. You should try checking your settings in avast by clicking "settings" then clicking "troubleshooting" then check to make sure that the "Load Avast! services only after loading other system services is NOT checked. Then also check to see if the "enable raw Disk..." box is checked or not and if it is not go ahead and check that as well. Then also make sure the "Enable Rookit scan on start" box is checked.

Anyways I hope this helped post back to let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the tips. I've tried again doing a full uninstall and clean install. I went with 4.8 again, since I'm more familiar with it. Let it restart and do a boot scan after install, worked fine, didn't detect anything, came back up still showing it running. Went ahead and registered it, since I hadn't done that before, since it wasn't working. Then just left it alone.

Now, to register it I had to right click the blue ball and choose "About Avast" and register it there. So when I went in to enter the number I noticed the variety of other info available in the About menu. In there is the VPS. I checked this and it said "Unknown - VPS has been destroyed" Uh oh! So I told Avast to update the iAVS and got it to show the current VPS. Then I rebooted and Avast didn't come up with the red X. So I rebooted again and this time it came up with the red X and checking the about the VPS now said something about "Unknown - file cannot be found" So the VPS went from "Destroyed" to "Missing" It seems that maybe I can keep manually updating the VPS and making it work again, but it's only a matter of time before VPS becomes "Destroyed" even without rebooting.

Any idea how VPS gets destroyed? What might cause this?

Hmmm... seems your avast installation is messed...
I would suggest again the steps above, including the fully removal of version 4...

Yeah, except I've lost count of how many times I've fully removed both 4 and 5 and done clean installs and had the same issue. I've removed to try various things in between, I've removed and tried other AV software, I've removed 5 and tried 4, removed 4 and tried 5, etc etc. No reason to believe one more removal and clean install will make anything different happen. There's something corrupting the database over and over, and I can't seem to figure out, or find anyone with any ideas as to what it would be.

Starting to wonder if there's some sort of hard drive problem, only oddity is that it's only seeming to effect AV software, and mostly just by corrupting their databases. Strangest thing.

I'll probably be doing another full removal and clean install in the process of whatever else I try, but I have the feeling there's something else that's going to need to happen first to make this work. Either there's something in the registry causing this, or some piece of malware that's so far gone undetected by Avast, SAS, MBAM, ComboFix, RootRepeal and just about everything else. Dunno, I'll keep working on it, thanks for your guys' help.

Sorry to ask... and bother, but there are two ways to run the uninstall tool. Removing the version 4 and removing the 5.
Did you run in both ways?

No problem, that's definitely a valid question. And yeah, I've run it both ways. When I kept running into the problem I really tried to get the system to as much of a "clean slate" as possible, short of reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows. But I ran the removal tool in safe mode for both 4 and 5. Also ran the AVG removal tool because that was what was being replaced since it wouldn't work right. Ran the Norton removal tool because it may have come preinstalled. Then ran the McCaffee removal tool just in case it was ever on there. Basically tried to make sure that there wouldn't be any bits or pieces from any antivirus on there at all before I reinstalled. Didn't make a difference though.

Did you have admin rights while installing avast?
What other security/firewall software is running on your system?
Could you post a HJT log?

Someone is not doing its job... some remain of the other antivirus is messing things here.
Or an infection. But you have scanned your machine thoroughly ::)

You're right, Tech.
Guessing is a difficult job, but maybe with his/her log we can figure it out. ;)
