Avast and windows firewall not happy together?

Is system restore also affected? If it is maybe you should check something I suddenly had to do last week. I had to check the security settings for my C: drive. For some reason, the entries for Administrators and for System were gone and there was only one for users which had limited access. I had to add the system group and the administrators group and grant them full access before I could regain control. I couldn't even set a size for my page file or use system restore. I still don't know what suddenly caused the problem.

Is the drive NTFS and not FAT32? Did you uncheck "use simple file sharing" in control panel - folder options? Whatever, you system looks like it'd heavily benefit from a fresh install.

Well for a start, follow up on this kb article from Microsoft

The configuration utility is msconfig
- and you go to Services tab in there, open it, and make sure the servicves outlined in the list are checked to start.

There may also be a few other things that you need to put right before you smooth running

I think as an overall checkup you should go to Secunia and run a scan - either OSI or download and run PSI

This will tell you what is not worling properly as advise as to the downloads you will need.
it looks as though many of yr services in general have slipped out of sync

Edit - sorry I posted just as yr reply was coming through - the kb article was Microsoft solution for error 1068
- I'm not sure how there could be so many errors, its almost as though yr back in SP2

As you can see things are not as straightforward as first seemed. Perhaps a HijackThis scan might help as well.

Edit - is internet time sync in correctly in adjust date and time? Also cannot rule out malware just yet.
Just trying to think of perhaps something simple that upset the running of services.
Someone else along soon might think of something.

Did you check while you were in Windows Explorer? I think that's the only way the security tab shows. A drive in XP has to be in the NTFS format too. If it's saying FAT, something is wrong.

XP also FAT but mainly earlier systems, before NTFS became only recommended option.

I know it says it's for if you have lost Internet connectivity but the same fix was suggested in another thread to fix the Firewall and ICS not starting problem.

Try this:
Open a run command and type: netsh winsock reset,  click [OK] then Reboot your machine.
After rebooting open the Run command again and type: firewall.cpl,  click [OK] and see if you will get the control panel for the Firewall.
If not try this open the run command again and type: services.msc,  click [OK] on the services window be sure windows firewall is started Automatically by clicking on Properties while Highlighting the Service.

No, you can either use FAT32 or NTFS with XP.
Also a mix of both is possible on different partitions and/or drives.

Yes, I saw that in my searches, I wasn't aware of that but the FAT system will have many drawbacks and limitations in XP.
Can the OS itself be installed in the FAT32 system?
