STARTTLS error when using HOTMAIL in Outlook Express
« on: May 25, 2010, 03:44:16 PM »
Ever since I installed Avast 5.0, I am getting the following error in Outlook Express when sending emails using Hotmail:

"Protocol: SMTP, Server response: '503.5.5.2 Only one STARTTLS command can be issued per session, Port: 587, Secure (SSL): Yes, Server error: 503, Error number:0x800CCC65".

Working environment:
Windows XP Professional with SP3
Outlook Express 6
Avast 5.0.545.

For Outlook Express, try port 465 for SMTP.  Alternative might be port 25 depending on your mail server.

I forgot to mention that the error comes when sending emails using hotmail (have modified original post to reflect this). Microsoft specifies port 587 for SMTP when using Hotmail in OE.

So 465 and 25 don't work either?  Can you add Hotmail to your title also; I don't use that one but there are others here who do.  :)

Using 465 gives me a different error altogether. Using 25 throws the same error.
Subject line updated, as requested.

Definitely AVAST problem, as emails fly off fine with AVAST uninstalled.

I figured it out!

Go: tools/accounts/(your account)

Click on the "advanced" tab.

UNCHECK the box that says "This Server requires a secure connection (SSL)"

Make sure it has the number "25" in the box above (this should change automatically.)

Problem Solved!  :)
