Settings: Do 'Alerts' work on the free edition?

Hi,

I've recently installed Avast! and have been unsuccessfully trying to send test messages on the Alerts page of Settings - is this feature available in the free edition?

Also on the Settings screen there is a STMP page, I've tried entering localhost and 127.0.0.1 (because I have hotmail popper sitting on port 25) but there are two greyed-out boxes which also makes me feel that this feature isn't available in the free edition - is this right please?

It should work in the Home version as well.

As for those two greyed boxes - it's a new feature (SMTP authentication support). They were put into the dialog (by mistake, I would say) shortly before the release of the program - but the feature isn't enabled yet. It should be available in the following program update, again both in Home and Pro version.

Thankyou for such a prompt reply Igor - when I tried to test ICQ and Windows Messenger I just got an "Unknown Error" report.

I've just tried to test the SMTP option and my firewall (Kerio) popped up to see if access to the internet was allowed but then I got the 'Unknown Error' report again.

By the way, all my email accounts use STMP authentification - could this be the problem?

I just used the ICQ Applet yesterday and it worked fine.

but when I send the test I just got an "Unknown Error" report.

I didn't have ICQ or Windows Messenger running (I guess I assumed that the messages would be sent offline) so I've tried again:

ICQ: I sent a message to myself & Avast! said the message was sent ok) but nothing arrived. Instead, an ICQ send message box was opened for me - at least something happened!

Windows Messenger: I still get the 'Unknown Error' report. This might be because its called MSN Messenger in the 'all programs' shortcut - er, I gotta vague feeling I played around with things ages ago in an attempt to stop the program being loaded all the time.

SMTP: Guess I'll have to find an email account that doesn't require secure authentification!

Thankyou to Bob (again!) and Justnet - it'll be interesting to see what the cause of your error message is too!

Unfortunately though, the alert still wasn't sent - I think I might leave it for now because it's a feature that I don't anticipate using.

Even so, it would be nice to know that everything's working as it should!

Running Windows messenger on your system leaves you wide open to all kinds of addware. Unless you have an application that specifically requires it, don't start it up automatically.

I think you are fine when using IMsecure Pro though its supost to block stuff like that.

Hi Bob,

I think it was because I was told that kinda thing that I disabled Windows Messenger in the first place!

I've put it back to sleep again cos I have been using Trillian for my MSN contacts - assuming, of course, that it's more benign than Windows Messenger!

There are 2 programs that sound a lot alike Windows messenger and MSN Messenger. The first one is the one that allows you to get slammed with all kinds of adds.
The second one is the chat program thru MSN
Trillion is a program that allows you to combine all of them into one interface.
The only problem I've found with trillian is in the file tranfers part of the program.
For that, I still find ICQ the best program to use.

I'm rather glad that you didn't come back with "Trillion is worse than Windows Messenger"

Most of the time I forget to switch Trillion on (though I do so more often now cos more friends in my home town are now online), and I haven't tried it for file transfers at all - I tend to let Trillion run, and then if anyone comes online, I go to whichever program they're using & use a mike.
