5.0.594 IIS update slows Outlook 2003 to a crawl
« on: July 01, 2010, 11:01:36 AM »
As per the subject title, this is occurring across Windows XP(32bit), Vista Business(64bit), Windows 7(64bit) all fully patched.  And Avast is the IS version and the issue has only been present since the update.

The Office package is 2003 and fully patched and service packed up.  We have the Antispam plugin installed.  We also use the PFbackup plugin.

Symptoms are sluggish performance moving between messages and folders in Outlook, and very slow startup of Outlook ranging in the >3 minutes range.

Harware is generally quad core CPUs (Q6600/6700/Phenom II 810/920/955) and 4-8GB RAM in the machines.

Try going to add-ins screen of your Outlook andthen disable them one by one (the last one being avast antispam toolbar). Restart of Outlook might be necessary after each such operation (not sure).
If you confirm that the culprit is indeed the toolbar (peformance comes back when disabled, drops when re-enabled) then (and only then) I would advise you to go to avast settings > Maintenance and check "Enable debug logging". But let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet.

Tried all that with no luck.  Uninstalling Avast returned Outlook to normal speed.  I'm just reinstalling now.

Ok, re-install, enable debug logging as advised in my previous post, restart Outlook and select one mail item, then select another (to simulate what you normaly do). Quit Outlook.
Go to
c:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (Win7) or
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (WinXP) and post the file AsOutExt.log here.
I will try to have a look at where the bottleneck might be.

Cheers, I'm just about to fire over another email, as there is still an issue outstanding I think.

Outlook 2010 slow using Windows 7 64 bit - AVAST 5.0.594
« Reply #7 on: July 08, 2010, 06:29:18 AM »
My outlook 2010 has slowed down since the recent update 5.0.594. Currently using Windows 7, 64 bit on a 2.26 C2D with 4gb ram. Scrolling thru each mail takes a few seconds. Very slow.

I've since uninstalled and reinstalled avast, but using a custom install. By unticking the mail check buttom - it runs fine. install using a regular install causes the problems again.

It seems there is a problem with the outlook mail and advast. Anyone have this problem???
