Thanks for the info on the other registry cleaner. Easy Cleaner does a lot of those same things with cleaning up your computer but maybe this one is more thorough. I will give it a try.
I do have MBAM installed on both of my own computers and I have used it in the past on other people's computers to clean up malware. This is a work computer I was having the problems with but an occasional malware scan isn't a bad thing for any computer.
I will wait another week and check on that machine to make sure Avast isn't having any further problems updating, and I will let you know.
