Does free Avast prevent *.lnk exploits?
« on: August 01, 2010, 02:08:36 PM »
Hi!

I recently read http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms10-aug.mspx ... I am wondering if the free version of the latest and updated Avast AV is enough to prevent this exploit for an old, updated Windows 2000 SP4 machine?

Thank you in advance. :)

don't wonder anymore, an out of band patch is out tomorrow ;D

edit: okay, I see now that's you're on Win2000, you won't get any patch, so I have no idea if Avast protects against that

I'm not quite sure, but it seems "LNK:Runner" is the detect-name of the exploit.

See here:
http://www.avast.com/virus-monitor
http://www.avast.com/virus-update-history-2010

According to this, detections of LNK:Runner are added at July 16 (just after this exploit found), and now it reaches the top of virus-monitor graph.
