avast.setup a resource hog?
« on: August 26, 2010, 03:03:16 PM »
Am running the free version of Avast 5. As i open the task manager i see a process avast.setup consuming almost 40-50 mb of memory apart from avastsvc and avastui. Now why is this process for? i thought the Avast was really light on resources and the previous versions had only the latter processes running in the memory! I have just 256 mb RAM on my PC so i want to get this probem resolved! Else i will have to switch to another antivirus but i love Avast. I appreciate any kind of help forwarded. Thanking all in advance

avast.setup is the update process. It should appear, does it job and gone. Which firewall do you use? Other security programs?

You're the same as I (read my signature).
Does avast.setup remain forever in the task manager?

Something is blocking it to finish... Other antivirus (old one)? Firewall?
Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

Sorry that i couldn't upload the setup.log file because it was almost 276kb in size and i dont have a C\Users directory. So what am i supposed to do now?

Well i was using Eset Nod32 until the licence expired out and switched to Avast. i also have comodo firewall .i dont think its blocking it. But if in case how should i set up to allow avast?

1.Uninstall comodo then reboot then reinstall comod then reboot then work
2.disable automatic update in avast!:out settings to only "manual update"
3."manual update"your avast database
4.reactive auto update

Unnecessary step.
Just manual update and allow it into Comodo settings.
Try, first, just disabling Comodo firewall and test if you can manually update.

i disabled the automatic update feature to manual and then updated.Anyway i didnt mess up with the comodo settings coz i dont know how to! It worked then and the process is out of memory and the pc is lot better now. i dont know whether the same situation is gonna come back as soon as i revert back to automatic update.

I have just 256 mb RAM
With just that I would get rid of Comodo and be happy that avast! works.  ;)

Now is it okay to install pc tools threatfire for added security because of outstanding behavioural detection.
comodo hasnt bothered me cauz cfp.exe just takes around 3.5 mb of memory on an average. so its never been a concern
