what antivirus did you have before avast ?
was the computer delivered with a preinstalled AV when new ?
have you uninstalled it ?
have you used a removal tool to remove all leftovers after the uninstall ?

removal tools can be found here http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

I had AVG. I uninstall it from the control panel
Someone gave me a link for changing the settings of AVAST but it was for version 4 and but didnt find for version 5.
I had similar problem with AVG too but it usually connected after few restarts but with AVAST even after several restarts it dosent connect.

What was this "link" someone gave you? Please post it, but sanitize it by editing the first letters to read "hXXp".
(This will make it a non-link.)

Try running the removal tool for AVG. Link in Pondus' post.

I suggest an uninstall and removal, followed by a complete reinstall.

Download these files first: The setup file (52MB)
Avast uninstall utlity.

Save them to your desktop.

Go offline.
Remove Avast via add/remove programs in the control panel. Reboot. (If there were any problems with the removal reboot into safe mode.
Run the Uninstall utility. Reboot.
Run the installation file. Reboot as prompted. A second reboot may be necessary, if the Avast icon does not appear normal in the system tray.
Go online again, allow it to updated, register the program.

Could be a settings issue, but we probably need a bit more info.

Did you have to disable Avast to download the files I linked you to?
How does your computer connect to the net normally?
What is the Operating System, and the make of the computer? Desktop or laptop?

Can you connect at all, using any program, or is it completely disabled, when Avast is running? (What programs have you tried to connect with. I'm assuming just a browser.) Other programs that require net access are Avast itself, for updates, and an email client, like Outlook Express, for example. Please try manually updating Avast and see what happens.

It's a wireless connection? Or cable?

There are programs that require a connection, and let you know if the connection is absent. So, for example, for browsing the web, you'd use Internet Explorer. (Or Firefox. Or Google Chrome.) For email you might use Outlook. Or Thunderbird.

Get the idea?

Which of these won't connect with Avast installed?
Have there ever been Norton or Symantec programs on the computer?
And once again, what is the make of the computer?

Time to check for malware, methinks.

Download MBAM (the free version) and install it. Update it, and run a quick scan. At the end of the scan a report will be produced. Select everything found and click "remove selected". If it prompts to reboot, do so promptly.
Post the scan report with your next reply. It can be accessed as a text file from the MBAM interface. you may need to cut and paste it into two replies if it's too large.
