Avast won't update anything

I installed Avast free on a compaq laptop, because it works so well on my desktop.

It installed fine and I registered it....BUT....

it won't update either through the program or from the control panel.

definition update says:-

Invalid signature file.  Setup will terminate.

Program update says:-

There was an error while changing the product configuration.

I'm getting close to the same thing. Invalid signature file when I try to update the engine and the program. Thanks in advance for the ehlp.

What AV did you have before avast ? some machines (like compaq) have preinstalled AV when new ?
Have you uninstalled it ?
Have you run a removal tool after the uninstall so all leftovers are gone ?

Nothing at all was installed on here.  Fully formatted hard drive.

New OS etc everything went great until I tried to update Avast which
was d/l from main site Saturday.

Okay now I have to apologize to you all.

This is the strangest thing.  As I said this was installed Saturday on a nice clean laptop.

It absolutely would NOT do any updates of any kind.  I tried SO many times Saturday and again yesterday.

This morning several more attempts....BUT....I just turned the laptop on to get the new version install and the green box popped up saying Avast was updated!!!!

engine and definitions  current version 100906-0
program 5.0.594

I do not understand this at all.  But it's done and as to why ALL the other
attempts failed is beyond me.

I've even shut down and booted back up to be sure it actually happened!!

This is Vista Ultimate so I guess anything is possible

I'm very sorry I bothered you all, and hopefully it won't happen again.  But if it does I have no idea what kicked it into gear.

They certainly do - but this was OTT for me, if I hadn't tried so many
times I could understand it all.

That was a nice way of saying computers can be possessed

Did you reboot after your initial install as this might have been all it needed.
