Stand Alone PC
« on: August 04, 2004, 06:56:47 PM »
I have a stand alone PC with no connections to the internet. My children use it to do homework etc. I am still concerned about security on this PC, as they sometimes bring floppy discs and CDs from friends PCs. How can I register avast! and get regular updates to this machine to ensure its security?

Thanks,

Bob

You should be able to download the updates from Avast! main page manually, then put them on floppy and copy them over.

Example: http://www.avast.com/eng/download/updates/update_avast_4_vps.html the exe file from here is only 1.60 MB which is too big to put on Floppy, (unless you can somehow compress it - I'm not sure) so you may have to just use a CD-R and continually copy the updates to that.

Hope this helps.

You will need a CD or use any splitter file (for instance: MaxSplitter).

Thanks for the advice about updating, the file size is not a problem as I have a USB flash drive I can use.

How can I register the software, the last time I tried it still expired after 60 days  :(

Sorry if these are very basic questions, but I am running out of ideas of my own.

Thank you all very much.

You can't use the trial professional version for more than 60 days.
The Home version is only for HOME and NON-COMMERCIAL use only and it could be free registered for 14 months (after that, you should register again): http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG

Although you've already said you've got a USB flash drive I've found a program that can format a 1.44 MB floppy to 1.72 MB.

The program is called SmartFormat.

I've only had time to format 1 floppy with it but it does work. The properties now say the capacity of the floppy is 1.66 MB. I haven't had a chance yet to play around to see if I could fill all that space without problems.

Hi Bob, welcome to the forums.

As technical said you can register the Home version for 14 months, all you need to do is register using a PC connected to the internet and give an email address that you can receive the emailed registration key. That email/registration key can be saved to your USB memory and then paste the registration key into your stand alone PC.

To enter the new Registration Key: Right Click on the avast! icon and click on About avast!... and then click on the License Key... button and paste the registration Key into the window.

Amerk-
Does it work with XP? I used MaxiDisk before on 9x but it doesn't seem to work in XP,something about DOS I think.

madmax,
I'm running 98SE & it works fine.

After looking at the site it doesn't look like it works with XP, only Win9x.
