SUGGESTION TO THE CAPTAIN OF THE AVAST SHIP
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:45:27 PM »
mY Humble opinion:

Avast 5 have a lot of bugs and iT is not faster than 4.8.

here are A LOT of posts about this:

http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=site:forum.avast.com+avast+5+slow

mY Humble suggestion:

SO, i suggest to the captain of the Avast ship to offer the version 5 as an "upgrade option" only, without forcing people to upgrade from 4 to 5.

You can leave the version 4 for users with old PCs.

p.s,

If you stop supporting version 4 the ship can sink!

p.s,2

Version 4 is a classic like Mario Bros! Don't stop support never please!

regards,
Peter.

that isnt a practical request, u get more with avast 5 and u cant stay in the past forever, things move forward and its a waste of resources to support old and less effective software
Windows 7 x64 / Windows Firewall OFF / UAC OFF
Real-Time: Avast Internet Security / WinPatrol

This is simple not truth for 130+ million users.
They won't, they can't, they shouldn't stop software development.
Version 4 is past. Move forward.
Support for it will end in next months.

Also, please, stop using CAPS!

First, you're wrong - there certainly were some problems with avast! 5 when it was released, but I dare say it contains less bugs than avast! 4.x today. And, on most computers it's faster and uses less memory than avast! 4.x (especially the updating process is terrible in avast! 4.x, both in terms of CPU and memory usage).
Searching the forum through google will hardly give you any meaningful results - most users post here only when they think they have a problem or don't like something.

Second, it's certainly not going to happen.
Supporting avast! 4.x is pretty expensive - and it holds back avast! 5 development. So we'll be trying to end the support as soon as possible (meaning - when the new versions of all avast! editions, such as the network/server editions, are available).

So, I'm afraid there's really no point in posting such "requests" here.

And yes, please stop using the caps in titles.

Well, you've got your truth, and I won't be trying to change your mind.
But as I said, the support for avast! 4.x will be ended as soon as possible.

what is the problem with keep selling licenses for both products???

you can get more money selling licenses for both products, and most important:

you don't lo$e thou$and$ of unhappy avast 5 customers.

p.s,

another idea is to include avast 4.8 with avast 5 (and future releases, i.e. avast 6, 7, etc) for old pc users (same idea like Norton Ghost2003 included Ghost9 in the 2009 version, and DOS 6.22 was included in Windows 98 or XP).

regards,
Peter.

The problem is not with the program itself, but with the virus definitions. Having to make definitions both for avast! 4.x and avast! 5 is what is holding us back. We have new things in avast! 5 engine which can be used to detect more malware - but if we have to support avast! 4.x, it means we either can't use them (so they are pretty useless and avast! 5 is not detecting as much as it could), or we have to do the detections twice, to support avast! 4.x as well - which costs time, and again, the time could be spent better on improving avast! 5 detections.

So, the updates of virus definitions is what will stop for avast! 4.x, because that is the problem. The program itself would "work" even after that... but will be kinda useless without virus db updates.

oh come on, this can't be too hard to make these definitions compatible with avast 4.

Do you use the free or the paid version?

avast! 5 is not detecting as much as it could
Please, drop version 4.8 as soon as possible!

Well, you obviously know more about avast! internals than me ;)
"Making them compatible" means doing what we do today - either not using the new features of avast! 5, or duplicating our work.

So no, that's really not going to happen, sorry.
The virus database updates will stop for avast! 4.x.

What are your bugs?  Do you have slowdowns?  I don't have a problem with 3 computers using Avast! 5 (Vista and 7).  Did you look at the dates on posts in the Google search you did?  Overwhelming number seem to be from first quarter of the year, tapering off steadily as Avast! 5 matured. Sounds like you are caught in a time warp-I certainly hope Avast! 4.8 goes away soon so all the Alwil resources for the 130M+ users can be concentrated on 5.1, 5.x,  and 6 as described by VLK.
