Avast REFUSES to update!!!
« on: November 07, 2010, 12:50:02 AM »
I just downloaded the latest free version from avast and installed it, EVERYTHING went perfect except it refuses to update, I have installed it on a virus / spyware free computer running windows xp I have tried manual update and turning off the windows firewall and no proxy and even ran the special tool from avast to completely remove avast from the pc all to no avail, I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, ( note ) this computer WAS running the old version 4.8 before installing the latest version, any help would be appreciated!!

Why doesn't it update, e.g. what errors are displayed ?

The XP Firewall has zero outbound protection, so it shouldn't be that blocking the update.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

It NEVER displays any errors, it just says please wait while initializing 1/2, I tried the repair option already.

I don't know exactly how you went about using the uninstall utility, so I will repeat what I usually do for the order, etc. for a clean reinstall.

- Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.677 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe (English only) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).
  • 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

When I moved up to avast! 5 from 4.8 I had to install 5 in safe mode with networking.

Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

Let me clarify something just in-case I misspoke I was able to go to the avast database web site and manually download the latest definitions to my computer then double click that file and it did up update avast ( BUT ) the automatic feature refuses to work and when I click on update to run the feature it refuses to update OR tell me my definitions are already up to date.

I will get the log file here in a little bit, i'm heading to mcdonalds for a ice vanilla coffee gotta have my coffee!!

To all the people who have taken the time to try to help I really appreciate it and I hope I can get this figured out.
