WVP2 ... Legit? Safe?
« on: November 26, 2010, 12:02:03 AM »
I've played many Windows Media Audio / Video Files before without a hitch.
Since my computer only has a CD Player Drive and NOT a DVD Player Drive, today I used my brother's Laptop to transfer these 2 Windows Media Audio / Video Files from 2 DVDs onto my Flash Drive.  I even played the 2 Files there on my brother's Laptop.  They played fine.

So, I then slapped the Flash Drive into my computer.  I tried to play them and instead of immediately playing the Files, Windows Media Player proceeds to download a WVP2 Codec?  Then I am prompted whether I want to install the Codec.  What the ... ?

What's the difference between these 2 Windows Media Audio / Video Files that are looking for some WVP2 Codec ... and the Windows Media Audio / Video Files that I've played without a problem before?

Could it be they were put together and saved on a Mac?
Or what's going on?  Is it safe to download that WVP2 Codec?
It says it's from Microsoft Corporation.

A google search would retrieve info on this codec, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Video.

WVP2: Windows Media Image 2

So it isn't so much that it is from Microsoft, you have to know the source you are downloading it from, as it could just be a come on to download malware.

If the codec is specifically for windows media player I don't know if it could be used on a mac.

Asyn, I already tried VLC not too long ago.  It didn't work very well in my computer.

Interesting... Never heard of VLC not working well..!!
Maybe it's because of your rather low ram, or which problems did you have with it..??

Well, David, it's still puzzling me why THESE 2 particular Windows Media Audio / Video Files need the WVP2 Codec when no other Windows Media Audio / Video Files have needed it before.

I guess my brother's Laptop did have the WVP2 Codec already installed since it played the 2 Videos just fine.  Still though, there MUST be something different about these 2 Files.  Maybe the person who put the Videos together used that Photo Story mentioned in the GIF you attached.  Maybe that could be the key.  They were a bunch of still images of my Class Reunion.  So, it's NOT like the Videos were put together by some nefarious person.

Maybe I'll wait to install that WVP2 Codec until after I've run an avast Scan and maybe an MBAM Scan.

If they were encoded using this file mvp2 format then they would need that codec to view them.

Generally it didn't provide good quality when I could get it to run at all, I don't hang about trying to get something to work when there are plenty of other options. I now use winamp as my regular media player, not that I'm a big media fan.
