I ran a thorough scan last night with Avast 4 and an infection was found. I followed the instructions to move the file to the virus chest and at the end of the scan I was notified that an infection was found and it could not be moved to the virus chest. How do I remove the infection from my computer? I ran a scan on the folder in which the infection was found and the scan came back clean, but I know this is not the case. Any suggestions?

I suggest you consider installing the latest version. It is stronger and a more effective version.
You can download avast5 and install it over the top of Avast 4.8(this retains your existing registration info and period). This will uninstall Avast 4.8 and install Avast 5 all in one operation. Or you could choose to do a Clean Install of v.5.1 from scratch.
As a starting point, I suggest doing a clean reinstall to ensure that all remnants of Avast 4.8 are gone.
For a clean Uninstall/Reinstall please follow these instructions (I have assumed you are using the free version):
1>Download the latest official version of Avast, 5.1.889 Free AV:
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe (English only) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
2> Download the Avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5 at:
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).
• 1. Now uninstall Avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot. When your system is up and running Reboot into ‘Safe Mode’
• 2. run the Avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode separately, first for 4.8 if previously installed, your computer will reboot automatically, then reboot into ‘Safe Mode’, and run the tool again for 5.0. Again your computer will reboot into ‘Normal Mode’.
• 3. Install the latest version and reboot.
Once installed, make sure Avast virus defs. are up to date and then run a 'Full Scan'
