Avast 5.1 and the Internet
« on: January 15, 2011, 02:02:05 AM »
Windows2000.

So, today I "upgraded" from 5.0 free to 5.1 free. I have automatic updates AWA all of the real-time sludge disabled. Since installing the new version, my firewall is informing me that something called "avast.svc" is frequently, persistently and annoyingly trying to connect to the Avast.com website. Can someone offer a clue what that's about?
Thanks,
James B

I won't even get into "disabling real-time sludge", your PC after all.

Many things Avast! use avast.svc.
Maybe you have "participate in avast community" checked in your main settings? Could also be new behavior shield activity, sending info back to Avast! HQ.

It isn't avast.svc there is no such file, but avastSvc.exe this is the main scanning engine and controls all the shields. Buy if you have none of the real-time shields enabled I haven't a clue what is going on.

So is it the avastSvc.exe file ?

I have no idea why it would need to be connecting to avast.com, but you don't give is anything to work with, ports, protocols, IPs if possible as there are many different IPs for avast.com including all of the update servers, but that would normally be the avast.setup file connecting to those.
