You can uncheck "Scan inbound", if that does the trick.

And keep looking here, since someone might come up with a solution - I tried to alarm the mods.

You could post a hijackthis-log here, so we can take a look at it and see, if there are any clues in it...

There is an awful lot of HP and Intel WiFi and BlueTooth stuff running.

Something might interfere. You might use msconfig to take out as much autostart entries as possible and boot with just the most necessary stuff and see if that helps in order to determine what program in particular might cause the problem.
Also disable as many of the additional services (HP, Bluetooth).

Sorry, but no better advice from here... except: install WIN XP clean, without anything else except graphics driver. Then install Thunderbird, set up the accounts, install avast. Check if it works.

Then install everything else one prog by prog and check after each installation, if TBird / Avast is still working. That seems to be the only way to find out the thing that causes the probs.

I turned off everything except anti-virus and still the same...
And this is a fresh 1 day old installation of Windows Xp, with drivers only, Hp stuff for my laptop and some other "normal" like Mozilla FF and TB, Foobar2000, TotalCommander.
Like I said, under Windows 7 on the same machine with the same drivers and other stuff, mail shield working fine, here not.
I give up.
Thank for your help.
