Little bug?
« on: September 16, 2004, 05:43:33 AM »
I packed one file as tgz. Right clicked the packed file and choose SCAN. ashQuick says it has scanned 3 files.... When I do the same and pack 2 files, ashQuick says 4 scanned.

What is going on here?

Does it not count the "master" archive file too, even though it can't actually scan it except by extracting/expanding what's in it?  That would make the count correcct in one sense, although not quite accurate.

Yes it does count the archive itself also. If you do this with a zipped file you get 2 files scanned. Still 1 file less reported than with a tgz archive.

Hmmm ... I know absolutely nothing about tgz's, but one thought occurred to me.  Is it by any chance a two-stage or two-level kind of compression, so that there's an intermediate file created during the expansion process?

Hopefully the question makes sense -- nearly 2 AM here, and that tends to do weird things to my already weird chains of logic.  ;)

Could be, I don't know. I just saw the different count with tgz and other archivers and wondered about it.

07.48 here and up all night working, haven't slept since yesterday 08.00. Could be my mind playing trics ;)

I think the explanation is rather simple ;D
As MikeBCda suggested, .tgz is actually a shortcut for .tar.gz - so, there really are 3 files tested:
1. file.tgz  (the outer GZIP envelope)
2. file.tar  (the inner TAR archive)
3. file.xxx  (the real file packed inside)

You see, and this is how avast is earning bonus points (=number of files scanned) ;D

Avast can even earn more bonus points if they include the 2 virusses in the vps I send them several days ago ;)
I've send them before 437-0 was released.

Interesting to learn that sometimes (and I'd better not count on this too often), if I'm overdue for bed I can intuitively come up with correct guesses about things I know absolutely nothing about.  Thanks, Igor.  ;)

Take all the thrill out of it for me, huh Eddy?  But you're absolutely right, it was sheer dumb luck.  :)
