Avast with Look 'n' Stop Firewall
« on: September 19, 2004, 10:46:13 PM »
Each time I connect to the Internet, my firewall keeps asking me if I want to authorise Avast Setup. I've not encountered any problems like this before with my firewall. Are there any Look 'n' Stop users out there that have had similar problems when using Avast or any Avast users that have had similar problems with different firewalls. I'm wondering if it is something to do with the fact that Look 'n' Stop automatically removes allowed entries when applications are removed (perhaps it somehow thinks Avast is no longer installed until it tries to connect to the Internet). Any ideas anyone?

redman,

You might have to un-install that firewall your using and then re-install it. Then try to see if it recognizes Avast after doing that. Just a thought. :)

If your firewall does it's job, it's supposed to ask you for permission to run a new program. I know that ZoneAlarm does that. The correct answer would be to allow the program.

Which firewall do you use?
Did you ask for 'remember' your choice?

He uses Look' n' stop,
Does it ask for Avast setup to connect after a program update?

I do ask Look 'n' Stop to remember my choice and it always has for every other application. It seems to work a bit differently for other firewalls though inasmuch as even if I tell it to remember my choice, if I subsequently remove an application I have authorised, the permission for that application is removed from the list of authorised applications (I like that feature in fact because it ensures the list is always up to date). Usually, only if an application has been upgraded am I asked to re-authorise it.

Exactly same problem was with Sygate firewall few months ago... there are some topics in these forums regarding that issue. I was too tired to "fight" with Sygate, and I switched to Outpost - unbelievable light on system resources and way better than Sygate.

I've heard that they solved that problem at Sygate, releasing new build, although I never switched back to Sygate...

Try to send your question to Look'n'Stop technical support (if they have it) and see what they have to say about that issue... I know that many people contacted Sygate guys regarding same problem with Sygate. It seems like it helped.

Cheers !

Here's a reply on the Look 'n' Stop forum:-

Quote
I think this is due to the way Avast! updates. When Avast! updates, I believe it creates a file called avast.setup and then deletes it soon after. This is probably what is causing LnS application filtering to consistently warn you when Avast! tries to update.

I changed firewalls as well, from Outpost to Look 'n' Stop.

Well they mentioned avast! updates... avast! can't change the way it works just because of them. How come that same issue doesn't affect any other firewall ? They should ask themsleves...

Maybe it's better to switch back to Outpost again ? Hehe  ;D Joke... of course, you know better whick firewall suits you better...

Cheers !

Redman, the answer you got is correct: avast! need to creates a file called avast.setup to be updated. It's a temporary file that it deletes after use. But, because of this, there is no reason for LnS stop it. We can use Sygate, ZoneAlarm, Outpost, Wyvern, Kerio, etc. and all firewall (free and paid) work with avast updates. Maybe LnS could say the problem concern to them  :P
